Besam
"QuickView allowed us to compare our company's performance to hundreds of others in our industry." Besam Automated Entrance Systems turned to the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program to help it find a way to enhance their management program. It was the perfect candidate to benefit from QuickView.
This nationally recognized business planning and manufacturing assessment tool would provide the East Winsor-based company with a full evaluation of all business and technical operations.
After completing the QuickView process, an assessment which consists of a questionnaire covering 12 manufacturing areas -- a major area of improvement in quality management was identified, specifically external failure. "We had perceived the cost of quality as a very complex issue. NJMEP provided not only a clear understanding, but an effective solution that wasn't difficult to administer," said Besam President Joe Loria.
The NJMEP field representative recommended and provided "A Cost of Quality Program," and assisted in educating staff and management in the implementation of the model. According to Jim Cicca, Director of Plant Operations, "by adding an investment of $5000 to prevention costs and $15,000 to appraisal costs Besam was able to save $150,000 in combined internal and external costs."
As a result of these efforts, not only has the cost of quality declined considerably, but structure was given to Besam's quality initiatives. In addition, the increased productivity has been a pivotal internal rallying point as the company heads in a more prosperous direction.
NJMEP continues a relationship, assisting in other areas. Adds Joe Loria, "Besam is seeing an ongoing improvement, not just and initial bolstering."
