Kason Corporation Achieves ISO 9001:1994 Registration in Ten Months!
Kason Corporation, founded in 1967 by Lawrence Stone, is currently located in Millburn, New Jersey. Kason manufactures circular screen separators, centrifugal screeners and vibration fluid processors for the chemical process industries. Kason employs 46 people in their Millburn facility and ships process machinery through-out the world.
Christopher Stone, Vice President of Manufacturing for Kason, learned of the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program Inc. (NJMEP) and its mission to assist small to mid-sized manufacturers at a Machine Tool Show in 1999. When Mr. Stone was seeking ISO 9000 program support, he selected NJMEP and their technical partner, Alamo Learning Systems, after exploring several alternatives.
In a program partially funded by a New Jersey Department of Labor Office of Customized Training Grant, NJMEP and Alamo Learning Systems worked with Kason Corporation to help them obtain their goal of ISO registration within ten months. “After an unsuccessful internal attempt, we began working with NJMEP and Alamo Learning Systems, set a deadline for March of 2001 for registration, and beat that goal by one month!” Christopher Stone exclaimed. The Fast Track™ program by Alamo Learning Systems commenced in April 2000 and registration was achieved by February 2001.
The ISO 9000 program benefited the company by establishing a documented Quality System. Kason is now able to positively identify and track machines as they undergo assembly and testing in their manufacturing facility. Customer feedback was also integrated into the Quality System to allow improved customer service. Chris Stone stated, “While it is too early to give specific numbers, we know that the control we have in place today will reduce waste and improve productivity.”
The relationship between Kason and NJMEP continues. Bill Wirth, an NJMEP Field Agent stated, “Kason has participated in the NJMEP Principles of Lean Manufacturing seminars and we are planning a QuickView Business Assessment with Kason’s senior management.” When asked about working with NJMEP, Mr. Stone said, “I found the NJMEP representatives to be experienced, professional and able to connect us with excellent, external resources.”
