About National Institute of Standards and Technology/Manufacturing Extension Program
In 1988, Congress established the Manufacturing Extension Program in response to a significant number of manufacturers going out of business and moving out of the country. It was believed that by providing manufacturers with technical and business management assistance they could become more profitable, productive and globally competitive.
Today there is at least one center in every state and a total of 75 MEP centers located across the country. These centers have assisted 62,400 manufacturers to date.
To the programs credit, studies conducted show that companies receiving assistance from MEPs during the late 1980s and 1990s had between a 4% and 16% higher productivity growth rate than those that did not have contact with MEP.
