NJMEP Service Areas
Innovative Marketing, the Old
Fashioned Way
In our world of virtual business, innovative young minds offer small New Jersey manufacturers hands on help. A Marketing Plan created through the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program, Inc. (NJMEP) by two graduate students from the New Jersey Institute of Technology zeroed in on a strategy to help Flemington Precast & Supply, L.L.C. make plans for the future and meet the challenges of today's changing business climate.
Flemington Precast & Supply, L.LC, a 22-year-old family owned business located in Flemington, New Jersey, designs and manufactures septic tanks and burial vaults from concrete. This company was contacted in November 1998 by a New Jersey MEP field agent, Jim Schulz and agreed to a QuickView Assessment.
From the QuickView analysis, our field agent recommended four areas to review for potential improvements. In addition to developing a Marketing Plan, it was also suggested that an Employee Handbook, detailing the company's policies and procedures be implemented. Also included in the analysis were an Employee-training Guide for on the job training and educational skills and a Business Transition Plan.
The most compelling directive, according to Flemington Precast & Supply's General Manager, Jeffrey Hoffman, was the creation of the Marketing Plan. "I was very impressed with the quality of the presentation and the information which was carefully tailored to our needs."
The graduate student team studied the business and analyzed the following areas:
· The business situation of the company
· Related industries and competition
· Determined the techno-economic position of the company compared to the industry
· Developed a Business Strategy and Marketing Plan for the company including recommendations for future growth and improvements
An immediate result, Hoffman added, "is that the information has enabled the company to move toward expansion by targeting additional areas specific to our manufacturing, which include, excavating contractors, builders, funeral homes and funereal products."
"I feel so strongly about the work done by NJMEP that I have, and will continue to recommend their services to other manufacturers I'm familiar with," concluded Hoffman.
New Jersey MEP continues the relationship with Flemington Precast & Supply, L.L.C. The next project is slated for the development of a web page to highlight a new product and services catalog.
