The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded more than $500,000 to the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Partnership, which assists small and midsized manufacturers, and the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, which conducts coastal environment research, Democratic U.S. Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez announced Tuesday.
“New Jersey is home to some of the country’s most innovative research facilities,” Lautenberg said. “With these funds, we can help increase productivity and innovation, even in these tough economic times.”
NJMEP is getting $139,965, and the Marine Sciences Consortium is getting $403,797, the senators said.
Meanwhile, the two senators announced today that New Jersey will get $5.3 million under the $200 million Emergency Food and Shelter Program, administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“These grants will provide a helping hand to individuals and families in the most precarious of circumstances while we continue working hard to pave the way for an economic recovery,” Menendez said.
The funds will provide emergency food and shelter to the homeless through private nonprofit organizations and local governments, the senators said. Grants will be used to supplement and expand efforts to provide shelter, food and supportive services to the homeless; transition the homeless from temporary shelters to permanent homes; and assist the homeless with special needs, mental and physical disabilities and illnesses, they said.
