Headquartered in Somerset, New Jersey, Carteret Die Casting Corp. produces custom die cast products for the automotive, defense, electronics and architectural hardware industries. Joe Dapsis, Sr. founded the company in 1960, which now employs 59 people and generates $6,000,000 in annual sales. The company has earned a reputation for producing a quality product that meets their customer requirements.
Intrigued by a marketing initiative, the management of Carteret Die Casting met with the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program, Inc. (NJMEP), a National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership network affiliate (NIST MEP) to learn how NJMEP could be of assistance with their corporate ISO program, plant layout and employee handbook development.
NJMEP Field Agent, Joe Mastrianni, worked with Carteret Die Casting to prioritize their programs and presented them with a plan for them to become ISO 9001 / ANSI/ASQ Q9001:2000 within a six-month time frame. Using the teamwork approach of the New Jersey Department of Labor’s Office of Customized Training Grant program, Mr. Mastrianni’s expertise in implementing ISO programs, as well Prism eSolutions, an ISO 9001 implementation resource, Carteret Die Casting Corp. became ISO registered within six months. John Mudrak, Vice President of Sales, Carteret Die Casting Corp. stated, “There was no way we could have done this without the assistance of NJMEP and Prism, and the full cooperation of the Carteret team.”
The program was concluded when Carteret Die Casting Corp. was recommended for registration in December 2002. SGS International Certification Services, Inc. audited Carteret Die Casting and found the company to be compliant with the requirements of the ISO 9001 / ANSI/ASQ Q9001:2000 standard.
Joseph W. Dapsis, President and CEO of Carteret Die Casting Corp. states, “Although all customers do not mandate ISO registration, Carteret management believed it to be important to the future of the business to ensure business stability. In addition, our operations have been made more efficient and we are a better organized company as a result of the process of becoming registered. Management is very proud of the efforts of its employees in obtaining ISO registration in a very short period of time.”
Carteret Die Casting Corp. has seen a 15% retention of sales ($900,000) and retention of 25 jobs. In addition, Carteret has new market opportunities as a result of ISO registration.
“Carteret is very dedicated to working with NJMEP. They brought us a professional resource that could deliver the system needed in an extremely aggressive time frame.” stated Joseph W. Dapsis (President).
