Working with the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program, Inc. (NJMEP), Alamo Learning Systems and the New Jersey Department of Labor, Office of Customized Training, Rehtek Machine Company achieved ISO 9002:1994 registration in 2001!
In 1990 two brothers, Stephen and Paul Reh, bought a small business that manufacturers components for pressure sensors for the aerospace industry in Passaic, New Jersey. In 11 years they grew their business, Rehtek Machine Company, from 1,800 to 10,000 square feet and increased their annual sales to just under a million dollars with only twelve employees.
Rehtek learned about NJMEP from literature they received in the mail detailing NJMEP’s services with small manufacturers including ISO 9000 registration programs. Stephen, President, and Paul, Vice President of Operations, had a great interest in Rehtek becoming ISO registered because they felt they needed a good quality system to provide the documentation and structure and discipline they knew they implemented in their operations. NJMEP was prepared to assist Rehtek in achieving their goal of ISO registration.
Rehtek worked with NJMEP, Alamo Learning Systems (the ISO 9000 program technical resource), Middlesex County College, and other manufacturers from New Jersey, in a consortium funded by a New Jersey Department of Labor Office of Customized Training, Workforce Development Grant to become ISO registered. NJMEP managed the program closely with the participating companies and worked with the New Jersey Department of Labor to ensure the program was being implemented according to plan and within the grant duration. The consortium met as a group at workshops at Middlesex County College lead by Alamo Learning Systems, and then received company specific on-site assistance from an Alamo Learning Systems Program Director to provide them with technical support to implement their ISO program.
In approximately 15 months, Rehtek achieved ISO 9002:1994 registration. “ISO registration transformed the company. It gave us opportunities to deal with business and industry leaders we would have otherwise no access to”, stated Stephen Reh. This benefited the company by preparing them to seek bigger customers. Rehtek reduced their delivery time from four to three weeks and allowed them to reduce their set-up time approximately 25 hours a week, which equates to a cost savings of $1,000 per week. “We have become a more efficient company and have an increased ability to present ourselves to the industry”, explained Stephen Reh.
Their next step is to target the medical, aerospace and electronics markets. Rehtek’s future plans with NJMEP include web site design, marketing and acquiring new machinery. Stephen Reh continued by stating,“ We could not have done this without NJMEP; as a small company we did not have adequate resources to get ISO certified. NJMEP nurtures small businesses and provides powerful resources in the hands of small companies”.
