National Manufacturing Day 2015: The Importance of Celebrating
By Lynore DeSantis, CFO of NJMEP
On Friday, October 2nd, New Jersey will join the rest of the nation in celebrating the fourth annual National Manufacturing Day. This is more than just a holiday for our industry – it is our opportunity to demonstrate the importance of manufacturing and inspire the next generation of manufacturers.
National Manufacturing Day is designed to expand the knowledge about and improve the general public’s perception of manufacturing careers and the industry’s value to the U.S. economy. Not everyone is aware of how vital manufacturing is to economic prosperity. Manufacturing supports more than 17.5 million U.S. jobs and for every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, an additional $1.48 is created for the economy. In fact, manufacturing comprises nearly 12% of our nation’s GDP!
Manufacturing also offers diverse career opportunities and well-paying jobs. The annual average salary of a manufacturing worker is $77k and manufacturing employees boast the highest job tenure in the private sector.
As manufacturing continues to drive our economic recovery, we need get the support of the business community, our legislative representatives, students and their parents, educators and the media, all to support our mission.
