FSMA Update for Food Manufacturers & Supply Chain Members

If you’re a food manufacturer or a member of the food manufacturing supply chain, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) directly impacts your organization.

  1. Food manufacturers (human & animal)
  2. Food ingredients manufacturers (chemicals, flavors, preservatives, etc.)
  3. Packaging companies including boxes, plastics, wraps, propellants, etc.
  4. All members of the food manufacturing supply chain

Increased funds have been allocated for the enforcement and implementation of FSMA rules, and your organization needs to have a food safety and HARPC plan in place. It is critical for organizations to understand the new rules and enforcement dates related to FSMA, as the consequences of non-compliance include higher penalties, loss of business, and negative publicity.

Changes to the Law

Under the FSMA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) greater power in handling food supply contamination. The law represented the first major change to food safety in over 75 years. The changes were made to shift the focus of Federal regulators from responding to contamination, to prevention.

Companies must now comply with the Hazard Analysis and Risk-based Preventive Controls (HARPC) provision in the FSMA. HARCP is a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan, but with more defined preventative programs. Organizations must address key topics such as allergen control, food defense, pest control, hygiene, cleaning and sanitation.
